Jordan Developmental Pediatrics
Our Philosophy
At Jordan Developmental Pediatrics, we strive to provide comprehensive assessments for children with developmental, behavioral, and learning problems. Our goal is to first make parents satisfied that we are able to meet their needs; it is important for parents to know that they are in the right place when they seek out a developmental pediatric assessment in our office. Our second goal is to make sure that our assessment is thorough and accurate and uses the best available tests and evaluation techniques. Finally, we want to give parents specific ways to help their children with the problem that they came to us for.
Our evaluation techniques are both somewhat unique and traditional
They are traditional In the sense that the tests used have been normed with large numbers of children and the results are widely accepted. In evaluation of children with learning problems, for example, Dr. Jordan uses evaluation materials developed by Dr. Mel Levine at the University of North Carolina, where Dr. Jordan spent part of this fellowship in training. Dr. Levine's methods are somewhat unique in that they very seldom can use a single word to describe a child, such as ADHD. Dr. Levine feels that children are far too complex for the most part to use simple labels, and that their assessment must be comprehensive and somewhat subjective, not just relying on scores.
Our office is user friendly
By this we mean we try to find the least complicated and expensive ways of dealing with our patients problems, while still ensuring that the care is at the highest level possible. Counseling and speech therapy services are an especially difficult area for parents to obtain services, even if they have insurance. If we are not able to obtain such services for our patients, we do our best to recommend therapies that parents can implement at little or no cost. We have found this to be especially important with learning problems such as Dyslexia, where tutoring can cost between $50-$75 an hour and must be done at least two times a week for up to two to three years.
We are a resource of information for parents
While trying not to be dogmatic and asserting that there is only one way to accomplish a particular type of therapy for children, we believe that at some point parents need a firm opinion one way or the other about the appropriateness of the many types of the therapy that are available to children with developmental, behavioral, and learning problems. When we do not believe a particular type of therapy is appropriate or useful, we will not hesitate to say so. We are finding this to be particularly true of treatments for Autism and related disorders.
Our therapies are safe for children
Although we can prescribe any type of stimulant or psychotropic medication, we try to minimize their use. At the same time, many parents are hesitant to use medications for their children when it is very appropriate to do so. Our philosophy is to prescribe as few medications as possible and in the lowest doses that are affected. If patients require multiple medications for serious disorders, we will not hesitate to recommend another provider.
